Field Note No. 002
When The Rain
Doesn't Stop
September 2026
The forecast said rain.
It just forgot to mention how much.
There’s a certain point on a camping trip when you realize the plans you made before
leaving home probably aren’t going to happen. The chairs get pulled farther under the
awning. The firewood stays covered. Everything outside gets that permanently damp
feeling.
And eventually, you stop checking the weather.
You make another cup of coffee.
You listen to the rain hitting the roof.
You watch the campground disappear a little into the mist.
Nothing really happens.
And maybe that’s the point.
We spend a lot of time trying to make good days happen. We plan them. Pack for them. Drive somewhere for them. Then something as simple as rain comes along and changes the whole thing.
But a changed plan doesn’t have to mean a wasted day.
Sometimes the rain keeps you exactly where you needed to be for a while.
Under the awning.
Coffee in hand.
Nowhere else to go.
Turns out, that can be a pretty good day too.
Until the next page...
